senate republicans have successfully blocked a vote on chuck hagel. republicans have thrown out so many different reasons for this it's hard to know why they're opposing the man becoming secretary of defense. it's hard to keep up with all their arguments. it's because hagel hasn't accounted for every penny he's made and every single word of every single speech he's ever given. it's because of what he said about israel and iran, maybe, but it's also because of the white house's response to benghazi, perhaps, something obviously, but that was nothing to do with chuck hagel who wasn't in the government at that time. well, today republican threats to take the unprecedented step of blocking a presidential cabinet appointment came to fruition, if you will. democrats moved forward with a procedural vote to end debate and pave the way for a final up and down vote. then it failed. it failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. so -- and this just happened. where does hagel's nomination go from here and what are the republicans really up to here

chuck hagel's nomination is held up. the expectation is he'll ultimately be confirmed but bill cohen said something this week to politico that caught my attention that does underline the problems that hagel could have as defense secretary. he said it's going to put him in a difficult position once he gets there. those resentments will weigh around. i think it's tragic what is happening and i think it's shameful. if he is confirmed, is' weaker defense secretary and is that something that weighs on the president's mind? >> no, he is not going to be a weaker defense secretary. he will be a great defense secretary. he volunteered to go to vietnam. heavily decorated when he was there. the last four years as the president chairman of the president intelligence advisory board in the senate where he is a leading republican senator. he is always done the hard work and made it look easy and exactly what he did. john mccain will be coming up in a couple of minutes saying frankly republicans don't like him i-i had an opportunity to

but they are blocking chuck hagel. leon panetta has said his good-byes, had his going away ceremonies. but they are not letting him leave now. because they don't now how long republican senators are going to keep filibustering. nobody knows. we have no idea how long it will take. one of the reasons it seems not awesome to not have the leadership in place in our key national security jobs right now is because there is someone inside the u.s. government right now who is leaking things to the press to try to get us to go to war in syria. someone described as an obama administration official started a few weeks ago leaking information to the press that is clearly designed to make it seem like syria has crossed red lines that would require us to get involved in that war. the leaked information is designed to make it seem like syria is using chemical weapons. quote, the official warned if the u.s. does not react strongly to the use of chemical weapons in homes, assad may be emboldened. there is no real proof they're using ch

and this was supposed to be the debut performance of chuck hagel on the world stage. and that is only the first impediment to hagel by this delay and this -- what they claim, the republicans claim is not a filibuster, but by any stretch of the imagination when you have a cloture vote and you get 58 votes and your nominee then cannot get a vote on the floor and they go into recess, that sort of smells luke a filibuster. >> have you heard anything about how people inside the defense department and even the state department, the other national security major agencies, how they're reacting tonight? is there any concern that this holdup is going to project weakness or otherwise be bad for the country? >> i think there's a lot of embarrassment and annoyance, anger. we do have leon panetta. we have ash carter, the deputy defense secretary. so there is leadership. you know, the other sort of incidental but not unimportant victim of all of this is also john brennan's nomination. whatever you think of it. that has also been held up until after the recess. for very good reasons,

[laughter] on the subject of the hearings, john brennan and chuck hagel, they stand in stark contrast. whatever one thinks about john brennan, and the disagreements are real, he was in command, knowledgeable, assertive, direct, and he made his own case. would that chuck hagel had the same level -- >> talk about our jobs, he has been lord high executioner -- >> and he wants to move it to the military. >> brennan does want to get the cia back into the business of collecting intelligence and of the paramilitary kinds of things -- not paramilitary kinds of things. somebody still has to do that job, though. >> marco rubio, emigration, and the future of republican politics. >> are we serious about border security and employment verification? are we serious about making this the last last time we have this conversation? or are we simply playing political games with people's lives and undercutting respect for the rule of law, the very reason they seaek to come to ths country in the first place? >> that is a congressman from south carolina on the house border security subcommittee. a long time
